One of the very beloved architectural styles in America will be the Craftsman bungalow house plan. The American Arts and Crafts Movement was popularized through the last many years of the 1800s through the early numerous years of the 20th century but remains popular with architects, designers, and also homeowners.
Opposite in the Victorian Age, where excess decoration, ornamentation, and accessories often filled a dwelling making it gaudy and uncomfortable, the Craftsman style offered open spaces, a shift toward using natural materials as well as a simpler interior with less clutter. Many deemed this being a “breath of fresh air” after the complicated Victorian style.
One of the very most famous American architects, Frank Lloyd Wright incorporated many Craftsman ideas into his designs. Around the same time, Gustav Stickley started to manufacture Craftsman furniture and build a magazine called, “The Craftsman” which made Craftsman style southern home floor plans offered to people during the United States by teleshopping. So, areas of the country where subdivisions were yet to be built suddenly had the use of home designs.
The Craftsman Movement also began a shift in how Americans lived. Cities had begun to thrive now many were moving in the suburbs. Suddenly, homeownership was not even considered, and soon the American Dream. The Craftsman style home gave Americans the ability to live simply and comfortably while surrounding themselves with natural materials that rural country life typically offered.
Upper and middle-class Americans who still preferred the ornate, decorative style of the Victorian Age, however, failed to favor craftsman style whilst still being preferred their luxury mansion floor plans. But, the common middle-class man who had been struggling to afford a home could now buy a Craftsman house plan since its materials were mass-produced. Craftsman style homes typically incorporated nature into the design and were cheaper to build, while also being easy to maintain. It was the ideal combination for the first-time homeowner!
There may be several characteristics that a Craftsman home includes. Craftsman homes are constructed of wood, stone, and/or stucco, have low pitched rooflines, wide eaves with triangular brackets, exposed roof rafters, and numerous windows. These houses all usually have large front porches with thick square or round columns, stone porch supports, and stone chimneys. The interior from the homes have open floor plans with few hallways, interior exposed beamed ceilings, dark wood wainscoting and moldings, built-in seating, and a lot of cabinets and shelving.
